Hong Kong Sheung Wan

Some love it, others avoid it completely, but there’s one thing we can all agree on: Sheung Wan is one-of-a-kind. Among the first areas of modern-day Hong Kong Island that the British forces settled, Sheung Wan’s identity has changed substantially throughout the city’s history. Here’s a quick look at the best of what this unique neighborhood has to offer today.

Coffee lovers have no shortage of options in Sheung Wan. A peaceful cafe down a hidden alley, Lof 10 attracts those looking for a relaxed afternoon. The Cupping Room boasts some delicious eggs Benedict and smoked salmon amongst their small selection of food options, and just around the corner sits the two-floored Barista Jam, a busier spot with nice fruit juices and employees who are serious about their espressos. Grab a seat while you can – you’re going to be doing a lot of walking here.

Hong Kong calls itself Asia’s World City, and that title truly shines through in its cuisine. Try out the French-inspired La Rotisserie, a must for those of us who love a well-roasted chicken. Feeling slightly more adventurous? Little Bao’s truffle fries, smoked eggplant salad with yogurt and scallop ceviche make it a sensible stop for the more curious palate. Or if you’re in the mood for Japanese, head to Yardbird, the brainchild of one of Hong Kong’s most prolific restauranteurs, Lindsay Jang, on Bridges Street. Give their sake a try – it’s a good pick-me-up no matter the occasion.

Of course, no trip to Hong Kong is complete without testing out its nightlife, and while many prefer the wildness of Lan Kwai Fong, Sheung Wan has a slightly more tempered offering. Both a bar and a restaurant, 208 Duocento Otto can be a dangerous place to walk into without a defined plan. Happy hour blends the line between brunch and dinner, and their 2-for-1 beers make time seem a little looser than it should be. Premium Sofa Club’s underground locale is perfect for its BYOB setup and likely-to-get-out-of-hand dance parties; they host a range of DJs that ensure you never quite know what’s going to happen. Or if neither of those seem right, The Black Star, directly across from Exit A2 of Sheung Wan’s MTR station, might just become your new after-work hangout. Their house cocktail, the Lil’ Red Rooster, will give you a spicy kick that lasts all evening. The menu there is a big one, so soak up the relaxed atmosphere while you try out something new.

There are plenty of shops to fill your afternoons and empty your wallet in Sheung Wan.squarestreet, the Swedish lifestyle brand aptly located on Square Street, definitely makes a case for the nicest storefront in Sheung Wan. Take a look at their collection of custom wristwatches, colorful leather sneakers and art prints of Hong Kong neighborhoods. Just around the corner is Tai Ping Shan Street, a haven of contemporary art, pop-up retailers and shops peddling their uniquely creative wares, though those looking for top-quality fabrics at surprisingly good prices will find themselves glued to the beautiful interior of the Grana fitting room on Hollywood Road. An apparel startup based here in Hong Kong, Grana breaks all the rules of traditional retail by cutting out the costly middlemen and taking their carefully selected fabrics from their country of origin to your wardrobe in as few steps as possible. Oh, and you’ll never want to take off their Peruvian pima cotton tee.

In case you were wondering, yes, there’s more to Sheung Wan than eating, drinking, shopping and dancing the night away. Built in 1847, the traditionally Chinese Man Mo Temple is a draw for visitors around the world. Light up some joss sticks, take a deep inhale of the relaxing scents that ensue and get lost in the infinitely intricate details inside and around the grounds. Asia Art Archive boasts an extremely robust catalogue of contemporary art complete with past exhibition materials and an impressive array of art literature. Man Wa Lane, just steps from the MTR station, is full of stalls of Chinese “chop-makers”. They’ll create your custom chops – your stamp or seal of approval for signing all those important documents – out of traditional Chinese seals or more modern rubber stamps.

It’s no wonder Sheung Wan was recently named one of the 15 coolest neighborhoods in the world. With an excellent mix of top-quality restaurants and bars, distinctive yet affordable shopping and opportunities to immerse yourself in Hong Kong’s rich blend of cultures, what’s not to love?
